'Pounding The Pavement, Anvil's 17th studio album, while still an unmistakably Anvil long player, is an even more diverse, inspired and vital metal opus than 2016's universally acclaimed predecessor 'Anvil Is Anvil'.

'Anvil Is Anvil' was rated 9/10 in Powerplay by Andrew Hawnt, who raved 'This is Anvil firing on all cylinders and adding more cylinders for good measure' in the magazine's March 2016 issue. Classic Rock's Jon Hotten stated in April 2016's magazine that "Anvil offer comprehensive evidence that they remain heavy metal's most lovable band... They're on rollicking form here, mainman Lips playing several face-melting solos and tackling zombies and runaway trains. 7/10"

anvil

Elucidating why 'Pounding The Pavement' turned into such an awesome body of work, vocalist / guitarist Steve 'Lips' Kudlow recalls that "The songwriting process started immediately after the work on our previous album had been completed. So our thoughts instantly turned to the future again. After 'Anvil Is Anvil' had been cut, everybody knew what we had just delivered and what Anvil's future should sound like. Of course we always allow inspirations from earlier recordings to seep in, but always with an emphasis on evolving the characteristic Anvil sound. Lots of fans keep asking us to play the way we did in the so-called good old days. That's why I try from time to time to pick up on that exciting feel of our older material. Mind you, it's always exclusively about the basic atmosphere of that time, never about copying an older song."

'Pounding The Pavement' contains typical Anvil steam hammers such as 'Smash Your Face', 'Rock That Shit' and 'Ego', but there are also unusual numbers such as 'Warming Up', which sees Anvil transport a kind of swing jazz style into the world of rock and metal. The most surprising track, however, is 'Nanook Of The North' with lyrics about the fate of the Inuit: "As a Canadian band, we wanted to focus on more Canadian topics," Kudlow explains; "I remembered a course at the College of Movie History, where I saw one of the first TV documentaries ever. I did some research on the internet and came across that strange overtone singing the Inuit do. I was totally awed and knew immediately what I had to do: write a song with that typical tribal feel. That college documentary was made some time during the 1920s and is called 'Nanook Of The North', named after the protagonist of the documentary. So I had found my title and the subject of the song."

'Pounding The Pavement' was put down at the Soundlodge studios in Rhauderfehn in the northwest of Germany, where Anvil found not only the necessary peace and seclusion to totally concentrate on recording, but also met in studio owner Jörg Uken the ideal producer of their dynamic new work.

There are few metal acts that have earned as much respect from their contemporaries While Anvil 'Pounding The Pavement' is a synonym for the consistently serious challenge of ensuring Anvil's financial survival. Kudlow: "I feel nothing could describe the way we've been working for the past forty years better than 'Pounding The Pavement': Anvil have tried for four decades to earn enough money to survive and continue to make music."

Anvil can look into the future with optimism, knowing that they have succeeded – as expressed in their song 'Doing What I Want' – in not having to pander to anyone's taste artistically: "Despite all adversities that the life of a musician entails, we still find ourselves in a very privileged position. We can basically do what we want to do. Nobody interferes, nobody tries to steer us in one direction or the other. Which other artists can say that of themselves? Even the biggest bands in the world envy us and tell us: 'You damn bastards have always been able to do what you want.' And that's precisely what we've done again on 'Pounding The Pavement'.

Seminal Canadian heavy metal legends Anvil have unveiled a new video for 'Zombie Apocalypse', taken from their highly acclaimed new studio album 'Anvil Is Anvil', and confirmed a major European tour for October and November.

Vocalist / guitarist Lips states that "'Zombie Apocalypse' is my personal favorite from the new CD...I love the feel and tempo which allows for melody and sheer power. I'm still finding it funny when I was asked "Zombie A coffee Lips?". Drummer Rob Reiner adds; "A blood Rock / Sabbath inspiration of sorts, combined with slamming doom feel....the track is hypnotic in nature, displaying a shredding of a guitar solo and has been fun to perform live!!! One of the many top tracks from 'Anvil Is Anvil'!" The clip can be viewed here:

Anvil kick off their extensive 'Anvil Is Anvil' European tour with 8 headline shows in the UK in October, before touring Belgium, Holland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, France and Italy. Dates are:-

19th October: Huddersfield - The Parish
20th October: London - Academy
21st October: Manchester - Rebellion
22nd October: Edinburgh - La Belle Angele
23rd October: Cardiff - The Globe
25th October: Gloucester - Guild Hall
26th October: Doncaster - Diamond Live Lounge
27th October: Grimsby - Yardbirds Rock Club
28th October: Bristol - The Bierkeller

'Anvil is Anvil', the band's sixteenth studio album, an unambiguous, uncompromising, unmistakably Anvil long player, infused throughout with a fresh, sparkling, self-confident vitality, reflects both the band's philosophy of life and new-found drive. "We're sometimes criticised for never changing," Lips explains, continuing "But why should we change something we're renowned for? Isn't it much more important to stay faithful to yourself? To do what you do best? The idea behind our latest album is: we are what we are, and that's how it's going to stay!"

'Anvil Is Anvil' was awarded 9/10 in Powerplay Magazine's March 2016 issue by Andrew Hawnt, who raved "This is Anvil firing on all cylinders and adding more cylinders for good measure. Opening with the tongue in cheek pirate anthem 'Daggers And Rum', the album offers a damn fine run of the classic Anvil sound, albeit with small additions here and there which add a lot of flavour. 'Up, Down and Sideways', 'Gun Control' and 'Die For A Lie' are very much in the classic Anvil mould, but then the slower 'Zombie Apocalypse' shows the influence that new bassist Chris Robertson has had, and it's a fun, slow grinder with a chorus that'll go down a treat live."

Metal Hammer's Malcolm Dome awarded the album 7/10 in the March 2016 issue, stating that "Whatever the prevailing wind, Anvil have always been unyielding. You know what to expect from any of their albums, and anything on 'Anvil Is Anvil' could be swapped for tracks from their classic early 80s period without disturbing the flow. And that's why this is such a metal testament..... They race into every track with such zest and command that you're soon totally immersed. From the humour of the pirate metal romp 'Daggers and Rum' through the socially aware 'Gun Control', the storming 'It's Your Move' (with a deliberate bow to 'Ace of Spades') and the martial 'Forgive Don't Forget', the record is stuffed with fire, ire and what can only be described as classic Anvil moments... A cracking ride"

Kerrang!'s Nick Ruskell rated the album KKK, musing "It is a very good thing that Canadian metallers Anvil were finally able to have a decent career in the wake of 2008's The Story Of Anvil documentary. Not least because the quality of their output has gone up since. Such is the case with 'Anvil Is Anvil'... 'Daggers And Rum' is a rollocking tribute to pirates, while 'Zombie Apocalypse' is a morbid stomper to party to. So yes, 16 albums in Anvil are still very much Anvil. And God bless 'em for it."

'Anvil is Anvil', is an unambiguous, uncompromising, unmistakably Anvil long player, infused throughout with a fresh, sparkling, self-confident vitality, reflecting both the band's philosophy of life and new-found drive. "We're sometimes criticised for never changing," guitarist and vocalist Lips explains. "But why should we change something we're renowned for? Isn't it much more important to stay faithful to yourself? To do what you do best? The idea behind our latest album is: we are what we are, and that's how it's going to stay!"

anvil

'Anvil is Anvil' presents guitarist / vocalist Steve 'Lips' Kudlow, drummer Robb Reiner and their new bassist Chris Robertson in a thoroughly magic metal moment. Lips: "Time will tell whether this album is the absolute pinnacle of our career. But I would already refer to it as 'gaining the momentum'. The year 2013 was a perfect new start for Anvil. We were touring, went on to write the new material, toured again and returned to compose some more. During that time, the new line-up gelled into a real unit. The arrival of Chris was just as significant for us as the film back in 2008. He helped me enormously with my vocal lines, which is why my voice sounds better than ever on stage and also in the studio."

The same could be said of the new material. 'Anvil is Anvil' sounds all of one piece and presents the band's amazing diversity, combined with their conscious loyalty to the compositional DNA of their own classics. 'Die For A Lie' for example sounds like a contemporary version of 'Jackhammer' and the stomping 'Runaway Train' features the same directives as 'Smoking Green', only based on Kudlow's present day maturity. "I practically graduated from the Bob Marlette University," the Anvil front man praises the American producer with whom the band recorded their 2011 release, 'Juggernaut Of Justice' and 2013's 'Hope In Hell'. "Bob showed me how to write songs which really mean something. So when I started to compose this time around, I was perfectly groomed."

The band elected to work with producer Martin 'Mattes' Pfeifer (U.D.O.) on 'Anvil Is Anvil' at the at the Redhead 4 Studios in Pulheim near Cologne, Germany. For Lips, whose family is Jewish, as is drummer Robb Reiner's, it was a special moment to work with a German producer in a German studio. "There's a song on 'Anvil is Anvil' that's called 'Forgive Don´t Forget', which says everything about our attitude. Nobody is guilty of anything that happened before their time, especially since Germany has critically examined and come to terms with its own past. Anvil have always been welcome in Germany, even during difficult phases. When we think of Germany, we think of friends, not war criminals." Lips takes a clear political stance with songs such as 'Gun Control' and 'Die For A Lie', which denounces the ambiguous role of the church; "Religion is frequently used to involve people in military conflict. Hate in the name of God – that's just wrong!"

Yet 'Anvil is Anvil' not only touches on sensitive issues but also documents the band's lust for life, their dynamic musical style and their absolute down-to-earthiness. When Lips delivers the line "Ace of Spades and the joker is wild" on 'It´s Your Move' with a surprisingly realistic Motörhead timbre, it proves his sense of humour and is in homage at the same time ("close friends with Lemmy since 1981, he is definitely part of the family"). And when Anvil invite their fans to the studio to join the choir on 'Daggers And Rum', it only shows the closeness between the musicians and their fans; "We've never recorded a pirate metal shanty such as 'Daggers & Rum' before. I'm sure this number will go down well on the upcoming tour."

Drummer Robb Reiner, who created the 'Anvil Is Anvil' cover art, recalls that "This time around, it was suggested I paint the cover art for the release by brother Lips, after I had come up with the concept and shown him study sketches drawn out. The simple straight to the point composition was much fun to render on canvas in oil. I spent about 6 weeks completing it."

***CANADIAN METAL ICONS' DOUBLE DIGIPAK "2 IN 1" 'PLUGGED IN PERMANENT' / 'ABSOLUTELY NO ALTERNATIVE' PLUS 'SPEED OF SOUND' / 'PLENTY OF POWER' ALBUMS RE-RELEASED MAY 21ST ON STEAMHAMMER / SPV***

Steamhammer / SPV are set to re-release 4 of seminal Canadian Heavy Metal band Anvil's finest albums as a brace of high class, "2 in 1" double digipak CD's, with new booklets, containing liner notes from Lips and Robb, plus new photos, on May 21st. 'Plugged In Permanent' / 'Absolutely No Alternative' (originally released in 1996 and 1997), and 'Speed Of Sound' / 'Plenty Of Power' (originally released in 1999 & 2001) will be available at the (nice) price of one single CD. On Sunday August 12th Anvil will jet in for an exclusive UK live performance on the main stage of the Bloodstock Festival at Catton Hall in Derbyshire.

Anvil, who have been on a rock 'n' roll journey for the past three decades, were catapulted into the international limelight by 2008's 'Anvil! The Story Of Anvil' movie, which became the highest grossing rock documentary in UK history within two months of its release, and has now been seen by well over 8 million people in the US. While listed as a prime influence by the likes of Metallica, Motorhead and Guns N Roses as one of the creators of the thrash / speed metal genre, Anvil appeared to have taken a back seat to this new wave of massive metal bands. But Anvil had struggled with bad record deals, bad management and just plain bad luck prior to 'Anvil! The Story Of Anvil'. Subsequent to the success of the film, Anvil have played the main stages of virtually every major European festival, landed opening slots on 2 US and one Canadian AC/DC shows, embarked on their first headline tour of America in 10 years and headlined the main stage of Germany's Wacken Festival, performing in front of 80,000 rabid metalheads.

Anvil recorded their latest album, 'Juggernaut Of Justice', at Foo Fighter, friend and fan Dave Grohl's Studio 606 in Northridge, California, with producer Bob Marlette, (Ozzy Osbourne, Marylin Manson, Alice Cooper). Steamhammer / SPV jumped at the chance to sign Anvil, along with their back catalogue, early in 2011, and released 'Juggernaut Of Justice' at the end of June. Powerplay's Andrew Haunt awarded the album 9/10 in the magazine's August issue, proclaiming "'Juggernaut Of Justice' is a brilliant example of just how great traditional metal can be when it's played with passion and fire. The production by Bob Marlette really captures the no-frills live sound of the band, and in all honesty they've never sounded better. Lips, Robbo and G5 have done their legacy proud, and 'Juggernaut Of Justice' is a brilliant return to the frontlines of metal for Anvil."

Anvil then triumphantly toured around Europe. Metal Hammer's Malcolm Dome reviewed the band's Islington Academy gig in July, stating that "This is perhaps their finest ever show in the UK. Back concentrating on the power, riffs and anthems that made them cult heroes in the early 80's, Anvil are again a ferociously charismatic force. Perpetually grinning, Lips soaks himself in the huge reception accorded the band as they launch into 'March Of The Crabs'. From then on it's a mix of old school faves and more modern chimes. Lips is a blur of movement and hair as his guitar fury leads Anvil through a set that includes '666', 'Winged Assassin', 'Juggernaut Of Justice' and 'On Fire', ranging from the earliest days to the current album. Drummer Robb Reiner and bassist Glenn Five are equally as vociferous... This is an explosive performance from a band who've rediscovered the will to headbang, and in the process have been re-embraced by metal fans. 9/10"
