Multi-platinum Southern US Rockers Molly Hatchet have confirmed a four date UK tour in December, following the June 2011 release of ‘Greatest Hits 2’, their double CD containing tracks taken from all of the band’s studio and live albums released since 1996, when they signed to Steamhammer / SPV Records. Dates are:- 11th December Sheffield – O2 Academy 2 CD1 contains the best studio recordings from the last 15 years compiled by front man Bobby Ingram himself. CD2 is filled with the best live recordings of Molly Hatchet classics plus one previously unreleased track, ‘Sacred Ground’, and a comprehensive booklet containing numerous new photos plus a new biography and liner notes written by Bobby Ingram. Molly Hatchet, who were named after a homicidal prostitute from the 17th Century who used to decapitate her clients, sold over a million copies of their self titled debut album, released in 1978. Following tours with Aerosmith, REO Speedwagon and Bob Seegar, the band’s second album, 1979’s ‘Flirtin’ With Disaster’ went double platinum in America, as did third album ‘Beatin’ The Odds’. 1981’s ‘Take No Prisoners’ went straight into the Top 40 US album chart and 1983’s ‘No Guts, No Glory’ fared similarly well, but 1984’s ‘The Deed Is Done’, which was criticised for its too polished sound, only just dented to Top 100. Molly Hatchet managed to reunite with their fanbase with 1985’s ‘Greatest Hits’ compilation and live album ‘Double Trouble Live’, but after the release of ‘Lightning Strikes Twice’ in 1989, they took a seven year sabbatical, which came to an end with ‘Devil’s Canyon’ in 1996. “After all those years, it was still a great feeling to pick up a guitar, connect it to an amp and start playing” recalls Ingram, continuing “Devil’s Canyon’ put us back on the rock music map.” The dark, sinister ‘Silent Reign Of Heroes’ (1998) was followed by ‘Kingdom of XII’, “an album for beer drinkers, for people who enjoy hoisting the rebel flag again” in 2000. The band’s live ‘Locked And Loaded’ album, released in 2003, captured Molly Hatchet at peak performance, prior to recording 2005’s studio album ‘Warriors Of The Rainbow Bridge’, dedicated to the memory of Bobby Ingrams’ late wife Stephanie. The band’s ‘Live In Hamburg’ DVD / CD, released in 2005, captured the mean mutha of a rockin’ machine that is Molly Hatchet live at their absolute best on video for the first time. ‘Justice’, Molly Hatchet’s latest studio album, released in May 2010, was awarded 8/10 by Geoff Barton in Classic Rock, who enthused; ‘Compared with the band’s early offerings, the production is as crystal clear as a vat of moonshine. There’s some fab pomped-up keyboard playing too, notably on ‘Deep Water’, which mixes southern grit to great effect... Vocalist Phil McCormack delivers a performance of pure redneck passion; you can feel his ample frame bustin’ with joy when he sings ‘Got that American pride / With that southern style / Born and bred something deep inside.’ If you enjoyed Skynyrd’s comeback ‘God & Guns’, you simply must buy ‘Justice’.
